SC verdict LIVE updates: Top court reinstates Alok Verma, quashes govt order

CBI vs CBI LIVE updates: The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on two petitions challenging CBI chief Alok Verma's removal. The bench had reserved its verdict in December.

The Supreme Court Tuesday will deliver its verdict on two petitions challenging the Centre’s decision to divest CBI Director Alok Verma of his responsibilities and send him on leave. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph will pronounce the verdict on two petitions, one filed by Verma and the other by NGO Common Cause, challenging the government’s decision. Both Verma and his No.2 Special Director Rakesh Asthana were relieved from office in a midnight order in October after their infighting became public. Joint Director M Nageswara Rao was appointed as the interim in-charge of the agency.

The bench reserved its verdict in the matter on December 6. During the hearing, the government argued that the two officers were fighting like “Kilkenny cats,” leaving them with no choice but to send them on leave. The court, however, said that the feud between the top aides of CBI was “not something that happened overnight to require immediate action”. It also questioned the government’s haste and asked why a selection committee was not consulted in the case.

Supreme Court verdict on CBI chief Alok Verma's removal

CBI Director Alok Verma challenged Centre's decision to send him on leave saying that it went against the rules that mandate that the CBI chief has two years in office.

The cracks between the CBI’s top two date back to October 2017, when Alok Verma objected to Asthana’s promotion as Special Director. Rakesh Asthana, a 1984 batch Indian Police Service officer of Gujarat cadre, is alleged to have demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore from a Hyderabad-based businessman through two middlemen to help him get off the hook in the Moin Qureshi case. Verma also alleged corruption on Asthana’s part with regard to the Sterling Biotech case. Asthana hit back by writing to the Cabinet Secretary saying that Verma was interfering in his probes and had tried to stall a raid on Lalu Prasad in the IRCTC case. He also alleged corruption on Verma’s part.

The turf war reached a crescendo after the CBI filed six complaints and an FIR was filed against Asthana. CBI has alleged that at least Rs 3 crore had already been paid to Asthana through the middlemen in the Moin Qureshi case money laundering case.

New Zealand edge ahead on see-saw day

On Day 3 of their second Test versus Bangladesh in Hamilton, when fortunes swung back and forth, New Zealand edged ahead at close of play. The hosts were 38 for 2, still trailing by 173. After cleaning up the visiting side for just 211, the New Zealand camp would have hoped for a steady start. However, the pace duo of Abu Jayed and Ebadat Hossain combined to trouble New Zealand's openers. The pair extracted movement off the pitch with Jayed also generating a hint of swing to beat the bat of both Jeet Raval and Tom Latham on a few occasions. Eventually, Jayed was rewarded for his perseverance as from round the wicket he got one to curve away to dismiss Latham. Raval followed his partner back to the hut by lofting a sucker ball from Jayed to covers. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson then survived a few anxious moments before a spell of rain forced the umpires to call off the rest of the final session. Among the two mainstays of New Zealand's batting order, Taylor took th...
