PM Modi-led committee meeting underway to select new CBI Director

Alok Verma was removed as CBI chief on January 10 barely 48 hours after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court. A meeting of the high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to select a new CBI director is underway. The meeting comes two weeks after Alok Verma was ousted from the post amid a months-long crisis in the probe agency. The committee also includes Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The CBI chief has a fixed tenure of two years. Verma, who was engaged in a bitter fight with former CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana over corruption charges, was removed as CBI chief on January 10, barely 48 hours after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court. Militant killed in encounter in J&K’s Sopore

During the operation, at Wadoora Payeen in Bomai area of Sopore, militants fired on the search party, which retaliated leading to the encounter. At least one militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Sopore area of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir early on Wednesday morning. The encounter broke out during a cordon and search operation launched by the J&K Police and security forces last evening after receiving inputs on the presence of militants. During the operation, at Wadoora Payeen in Bomai area of Sopore, militants fired on the search party, which retaliated leading to the encounter.
