Mumbai Police say ‘no proof’ against Nana Patekar in Tanushree Dutta molestation case

Dutta had come out against Patekar with sexual harassment charges in October last year, thus fuelling the #MeToo movement in Bollywood. "No proof to prosecute actor Nana Patekar in Tanushree Dutta molestation case," the police told a local court.

The Mumbai Police said it did not find any evidence in the sexual harassment complaint filed by actress Tanushree Dutta against actor Nana Patekar. Dutta’s allegations in October last year fuelled the #MeToo movement in Bollywood.

“No proof to prosecute actor Nana Patekar in Tanushree Dutta molestation case,” the police informed a local court.

Reacting to the Mumbai police’ statement to the court, Tanushree Dutta said, “A corrupt police force and legal system giving a clean chit to an even more corrupt person Nana who has been accused even in the past of bullying, intimidation and harassment by several women in the film industry.”

Stating that she was neither surprised nor shocked at the statement given by police to the court, Dutta questioned the rush on part of the police to file a B-summary report when all witness statements had not been recorded.

Advocate Nitin Satpute who is representing Tanushree Dutta said: “Police acted negligently to protect Nana Patekar. Many witnesses’ statement not recorded yet, one Shyni Shetty statement was recorded partly, police have not investigated properly so we are opposing the summary reports and are going to file a writ petition before the Bombay High Court.”

He added that he had not received any official information from the Oshiwara police station regarding the classification of offence.

The suburban Oshiwara police on Wednesday filed a ‘B Summary’ report before a metropolitan magistrate in Andheri, Deputy Commissioner of Police Paramjit Singh Dahiya told news agency PTI. A ‘B-Summary’ report is filed when the police do not find any evidence against the accused to file a chargesheet and seek trial.

Claiming that the allegations charged against Nana Patekar were false, his lawyer, Advocate Aniket Nikam in a statement to news agency ANI, said, “The entire allegations against my client were false from the inception. My client is innocent and justice will be served.”

In an interview with Zoom TV, Dutta accused Patekar of harassing her on the sets of 2008 film ‘Horn Ok Please’. She alleged that Patekar inappropriately touched her during the filming of the song sequence despite her making it clear she wasn’t comfortable performing “lewd, vulgar or uncomfortable steps”.

Dutta claimed that industry insiders knew about the incident, however, they did not speak about it. Nana Patekar had refuted the charges, calling the allegations “a lie”. Reacting to the complaint filed by Dutta then, he had said, “Whatever I had to say, I said 10 years back. What is a lie, is a lie. I’ll hold a press conference soon.”

In May, Dutta’s lawyer Nitin Satpute had held a press conference to dispel alleged rumors about Mumbai Police giving Patekar a clean chit.
