Three elderly passengers on board Kerala Express die of heatstroke

The railways issued a statement in which it said the cause of the deaths can be only confirmed after postmortem.

Three elderly passengers travelling from Agra to Coimbatore on board Kerala Express reportedly died of heatstroke and another passenger was admitted to hospital in critical condition. The railways issued a statement saying the exact cause of the deaths can be only ascertained after postmortem.

The deceased have been identified as Pachya (80), Balakrishna (67) and Dhanlakshmi (74). All three were travelling in non-air-conditioned sleeper coaches.

According to North-Central railway spokesperson Ajit Kumar Singh, railway authorities on Monday evening sent a team of doctors to Jhansi station after receiving information about a few passengers falling unconscious.

“Doctors found that Panchya and Balakrishna in coach S-8 and passenger Dhanlakshmi in coach S-9 were already dead. Another patient was sent to Civil Hospital in serious condition,” Singh said in a statement.

“Postmortem report of the deceased is awaited and cause of death would be confirmed after that. The train had left Agra at 4.02 pm and reached Jhansi at 7 pm before its scheduled time. On Tuesday, the bodies will be sent to their respective home towns,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the North-Central railway has appealed all passengers to drink and carry enough water with them during train journeys and call toll-free number 138 in case they need help.
